Signs it may be time to replace your siding

Your siding protects your home from wind, rain, and pests. When it fails, your walls and foundation are at risk. Here are the most common signs that you need new siding.

1. Rotting or Soft Spots

Press on your siding with your finger. If it feels soft or spongy, moisture has gotten inside. Wood siding rots; vinyl can become brittle and crack.

2. Buckling or Warping Panels

If your siding looks wavy or has bubbles, that usually means improper installation or trapped moisture. It won’t get better on its own.

3. Cracks or Holes

Even small cracks let water and insects in. Vinyl siding can crack from hail or age. Wood siding can split. Replace damaged sections promptly.

4. Faded or Peeling Paint

If you have wood or LP SmartSide siding, peeling paint means the protective layer is failing. Repainting every 10–15 years is normal, but if paint peels soon after painting, the siding itself may be bad.

5. Mold, Mildew, or Fungus

Green or black growth on your siding isn’t just ugly – it traps moisture and can cause rot. Pressure washing might clean it, but if the growth returns quickly, the siding is holding moisture.

6. High Energy Bills

Siding provides insulation. If your heating or cooling bills have gone up without explanation, your siding might be letting air escape.
