How to Tell If Your Roof Has Storm Damage

After a severe thunderstorm, hailstorm, or high winds, your roof might be damaged even if you can’t see it from the ground. Here are the most common signs to look for – safely, from the ground.

1. Missing or Broken Shingles

Walk around your house and look up. If you see any shingles that are completely gone, cracked, or torn, that’s a clear sign of wind or hail damage.

2. Granules in Your Gutters

Asphalt shingles lose their protective coating over time, but a sudden increase in granules after a storm means hail has bruised the shingles. Check your downspouts and gutters.

3. Dents on Metal Parts

Look at your gutters, downspouts, vents, and flashing. If you see small dents or dimples, hail likely hit your roof as well.

4. Curled or Lifted Shingle Edges

Strong winds can lift shingles, breaking the adhesive seal. If the edges of your shingles are curled up or not lying flat, rain can get underneath.

5. Soft or Spongy Spots

If you can safely look at your roof from a window or using binoculars, watch for sagging areas. Never walk on a damaged roof. Soft spots often mean the decking underneath is wet and rotting.

6. Ceiling Stains or Dripping Water

If you see water stains on your ceiling or walls, or if you hear dripping in your attic, you already have a leak that needs immediate attention.
