A Roof Replacement Near Hills, Iowa
When high winds swept through Johnson County, the Miller family’s roof near Hills, Iowa took a beating. Missing shingles, lifted tabs, and a few active leaks made it clear that repairs wouldn’t be enough. They needed a full replacement.
The Millers called Ridge Valley Roofing & Siding after seeing our free drone inspection offer online. We flew our drone over their home, captured clear photos of the wind damage, and walked them through every shingle that was compromised. They appreciated the honest, no‑pressure approach and decided to move forward with a complete tear‑off and new roof installation.
Project Location
Just outside Hills, Iowa – a quiet rural area where open fields let wind build up speed before hitting homes. The Miller property had mature trees and a steep back slope that made ladder inspections risky. Our drone made the initial assessment safe and thorough.
Materials Used
- Owens Corning Duration® Cool Roof shingles – These shingles have a special reflective coating that reduces heat absorption. They also feature the SureNail® technology for better wind resistance, rated up to 130 mph.
- Synthetic underlayment – Stronger and more tear‑resistant than traditional felt paper. It also provides better waterproofing.
- Drip edge – Installed along the eaves and rakes to direct water away from the fascia board and into the gutters.
- Ridge vents – Added to improve attic airflow, which prevents ice dams in winter and keeps the attic cooler in summer.
The Work Process
Our crew arrived on a Monday morning. We tarped the yard, set up a magnetic nail sweeper, and began the tear‑off. The old shingles were curling and had significant granule loss – clear signs they were past their useful life.
Underneath, we found a few sheets of rotted decking near the chimney. We replaced those with new plywood, then installed ice and water shield in the valleys and along the eaves for extra protection against ice dams.
The new Duration shingles went down quickly. The cool roof technology means the Millers will see lower attic temperatures in summer, which can reduce cooling costs. The ridge vents were added to balance intake and exhaust airflow.
By Wednesday afternoon, the roof was finished. We did a final cleanup with magnet sweepers and blowers, then walked the property with the Millers to make sure they were happy.
The Result
The Miller family now has a durable, energy‑efficient roof that should last 25–30 years. The new shingles resist wind better than their old ones, and the cool coating helps keep their home comfortable even during Iowa’s hottest months.
“The drone inspection showed us damage we never would have seen from the ground,” said Mr. Miller. “The crew was professional, cleaned up every nail, and finished on time. We’re very happy.”
